          <description>Category: Studentship | Group: Engineering &amp; Applied Science | Department: Engineering &amp; Applied Science | Closing Date: 30 Jun 2013 |
Applications are invited for a three-year PhD studentship, supported by the School of Engineering and Applied Science, to be undertaken within the Nonlinearity and Complexity Research Group (http://www1.aston.ac.uk/eas/research/groups/ncrg/) at Aston University.&amp;nbsp; The successful applicant will join an established experimental group working on machine learning and social media analysis.
The position is available to start in October 2013 (subject to negotiation)
 Financial Support
This studentship includes a fee bursary to cover the home/EU fees rate plus a maintenance allowance of &amp;pound;13,590 (increases on an annual basis). Applicants from outside the EU may apply for this studentship but will need to pay the difference between the &amp;lsquo;Home/EU&amp;rsquo; and the &amp;lsquo;Overseas&amp;rsquo; tuition fees.&amp;nbsp; This will be &amp;pound;11,010 in the academic year 2013/14.
Background of the Project
In the online social media space, it is often observed that users connected with each other are likely to express similar opinions. Such connections can be established by either explicit connections, e.g., a user follows another in Twitter or one is another&amp;rsquo;s friend in Facebook, or social interactions, e.g., a user posts another one&amp;rsquo;s message to his/her followers in Twitter (called retweet) or users express their support on someone&amp;rsquo;s post by clicking on the &amp;ldquo;Like&amp;rdquo; button in Facebook. Such social interactions are often viewed as endorsements of one&amp;rsquo;s support of another&amp;rsquo;s opinion. In many models of opinion formation, two basic social psychological mechanisms can be identified: social influence and homophily. While opinion diffusion patterns might be created by social influence, they might also be created because of dyadic similarities among neighbouring nodes in social networks without causal influence (homophily), or external influences such as marketing or mass advertising (confounding factors).
Project

This PhD project aims to investigate what factors influence opinion formation and how opinions diffuse over implicit social networks on the social web using techniques from statistical modelling, machine learning, natural language processing, and data mining. In particular, it will develop novel models for opinion diffusion analysis so as to facilitate opinion prediction.
 Person Specification

The successful applicant should have a first class or upper second class honours degree or equivalent qualification in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics or a related discipline. Knowledge of machine learning or natural language processing would be desirable.
For informal enquiries about this opportunity, contact Dr Yulan He (email: y.he9@aston.ac.uk, tel.: +44 (0)121 204 5329).
The online application form, reference forms and details of entry requirements, including English language are available at http://www1.aston.ac.uk/eas/research/prospective-research-students/how-to-apply/

(Unlocking the capacity of long haul and unrepeatered transmission systems)

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow in Photonic Communication System Research, focused on technologies which may revolutionize the way in which optical networks are deployed worldwide.

Having undergone exponential growth in capacity since its commercial introduction in 1975, the optical fibre communication network is rapidly approaching a significant capacity crunch. This threatens to destroy business models relying on negligible cost for information transmission and the projects UNLOC (EPSRC) and GRIFFON (MC IAPP) are targeted at developing new technologies to release additional capacity from the installed optical fibre. This position will develop revolutionary technologies and network architectures to enable new cost-reduced approaches to high capacity ultra-long haul optical networks and unrepeatered point to point systems. The work will build on recent world-leading advances in all optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing, nonlinear transmission, phase sensitive and insensitive amplifiers and coherent detection to generate novel solutions to the capacity crunch.

You&amp;nbsp;will join an established team within the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies, will carry out research in purpose-built photonics communications research facilities at Aston University, and will be involved in&amp;nbsp;collaboration with industrial project partners operating to short timescales. Training opportunities will be provided to acquire appropriate, experimental and numerical research skills.

You&amp;nbsp;should have a degree (minimum 2:1) in electronic engineering, applied physics or related subject; a PhD related to optical communications and/or equivalent experience in the photonics industry and would be free to travel throughout the European Economic Area.

Applications are invited for a three year PhD studentship, supported by the School of Engineering and Applied Science, to be undertaken within the Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry Subject Group (http://www1.aston.ac.uk/eas/about-eas/academic-groups/ceac/research/)at Aston University. The successful applicant will join internationally renowned scientists and engineers within the Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry Subject Group working on different aspects of polymer science and advanced materials and processing engineering.

The position is available to start before 31 July 2013.

&amp;nbsp;Financial Support

This studentship includes a fee bursary to cover the home/EU fees rate, plus a maintenance allowance of &amp;pound;13,590 (subject to eligibility).

Applicants from outside the EU may apply for this studentship but will need to pay the difference between the &amp;lsquo;Home/EU&amp;rsquo; and the &amp;lsquo;Overseas&amp;rsquo; tuition fees, currently this is &amp;pound;10,372.

&amp;nbsp;Background of the Project

Enhanced oil recovery refers to the third stage of recovering oil from an oil reservoir after the primary production (driven by formation pressure) and the secondary water flooding replacement. At this stage the oil retention normally accounts for 50-60% of the original oil in place, but it is considerably more difficult to recover due to the complexity of oil flow paths in the porous reservoir rock and high temperature, high pressure and high salinity of the reservoir. This research aims to develop new types of cost-effective nanofluids to address the urgent requirement of better enhanced oil recovery technologies and the challenge of controlling properties of enhanced oil recovery fluids from oil reservoirs.

To meet the requirement of both material properties and cost-effectiveness for the large scale production, carbon-based nanoparticles from renewable resources will be developed for the formulation of nanofluids. Manipulation of nanostructures and behaviour of the nanofluids will be applied to control their mass transfer in the microporous reservoir environment.

Person Specification

The successful applicant should have a first class or upper second class honours degree or equivalent qualification in Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Chemistry, materials or a related discipline.&amp;nbsp; Knowledge of nanotechnology (colloidal science and engineering), petroleum production, fluid low in porous material and formulation would be desirable.
