We are looking for a highly motivated individual for this postdoctoral research position in the general areas of statistical physics and Bayesian inference. The emphasis of this research will be on employing theoretical and numerical methods from Bayesian statistics and statistical physics to study properties of equilibrium-like domains within non-equilibrium systems.

The aim of the project is to better understand the formation of equilibrium-like domains in non-equilibrium systems, their emergence and control. The project will include both analysis of simple systems and the study of natural and technological systems using real data.

You should have excellent mathematical and computational skills and have a background in statistical physics and Bayesian inference.

Further details on the research project can be found on: http://www.aston.ac.uk/ncrg

Informal enquires should be directed to Professor David Saad, email: d.saad@aston.ac.uk

Aston University School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) is consistently ranked as one of the top Universities in the UK for engineering-related disciplines. Our research strengths are concentrated in selected areas, are often multidisciplinary in nature and are designed to promote solutions to practical problems.

The Mathematics Group in the School of Engineering and Applied Science is seeking to make two new appointments at the lecturer (equivalent to US Associate Professor) level. The appointments will augment our existing strengths in statistical pattern processing, machine learning, and statistical physics and dynamical modelling of complex systems (http://www.aston.ac.uk/ncrg) and would ideally be in the broad area of probabilistic approaches to non-linear signal processing and control. We are seeking strong enthusiastic applicants keen to develop their international research profiles and their own research teams. We particularly welcome female applicants as women are currently under-represented in this area.

All our mathematics staff are fully integrated in delivering our mainstream mathematics programmes at undergraduate and graduate levels and the new appointees will be expected to deliver excellence in their teaching as well as developing their research profiles. (Unlocking the capacity of long haul and unrepeatered transmission systems)

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow in Photonic Communication System Research, focused on technologies which may revolutionize the way in which optical networks are deployed worldwide.

Having undergone exponential growth in capacity since its commercial introduction in 1975, the optical fibre communication network is rapidly approaching a significant capacity crunch. This threatens to destroy business models relying on negligible cost for information transmission and the projects UNLOC (EPSRC) and GRIFFON (MC IAPP) are targeted at developing new technologies to release additional capacity from the installed optical fibre. This position will develop revolutionary technologies and network architectures to enable new cost-reduced approaches to high capacity ultra-long haul optical networks and unrepeatered point to point systems. The work will build on recent world-leading advances in all optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing, nonlinear transmission, phase sensitive and insensitive amplifiers and coherent detection to generate novel solutions to the capacity crunch.

You will join an established team within the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies, will carry out research in purpose-built photonics communications research facilities at Aston University, and will be involved in collaboration with industrial project partners operating to short timescales. Training opportunities will be provided to acquire appropriate, experimental and numerical research skills.

You should have a degree (minimum 2:1) in electronic engineering, applied physics or related subject; a PhD related to optical communications and/or equivalent experience in the photonics industry and would be free to travel throughout the European Economic Area.
