Within the UncertWeb project (http://www.uncertweb.org/) we are looking for two talented individuals to develop tools to help users deploy and use models and create clients for models and chains of models deployed in the UncertWeb framework. &amp;nbsp; This work will link closely with the composition services being created by our partners in Italy.&amp;nbsp; Within this project you will work with UncertWeb team members in Aston University, the University of Muenster, and the Italian National Research Council in Florence to develop software that makes it easy to integrate existing modelling frameworks in the UncertWeb.

The other post will involve researching methods to help users (scientists typically) run their models, which have been deployed within the UncertWeb modelling framework.&amp;nbsp; You will work with the UncertWeb developers, implementing software to enable model developers and users to easily deploy their data into the UncertWeb framework, typically either an online file store or a web service such as a Sensor Observation Service.&amp;nbsp; You will also research creating a client or system to help run the published models using a scripting language.

<title>Full-Time PhD Studentship (3 years) - Auditory Grouping and Scene Analysis (R120089)</title>

Applications are invited for a Full-Time Three Year Research Studentship under the supervision of Professor Brian Roberts (Psychology Subject Group). The project will contribute to the research activities of the Sensory and Perceptual Systems Research Group in the School of Life and Health Sciences at Aston University, Birmingham, UK.

 The Project:

Hearing is the process by which we perceive objects and events in the world from the sounds that they produce. Since it is rare for only one source of sound to be active at any one time, the auditory system must be able to group together those acoustic elements that come from one source and to segregate those that come from other sources. Without a solution to this &amp;ldquo;auditory scene analysis&amp;rdquo; problem, our perceptions of sound would not correspond to the events that produced them.

In principle, any behavioural research (psychophysical, perceptual, cognitive methods) in the field of auditory grouping and scene analysis is permissible, using human listeners with normal hearing. There are many possibilities, but three areas which may prove particularly fruitful are:(1) the dynamics of auditory stream segregation; (2) the perceptual organization of speech; (3) the auditory continuity illusion. More information on the project, and on the research activities of the project supervisor, can be found on the homepage of Professor Roberts: http://www1.aston.ac.uk/lhs/staff/az-index/robertsb/

Informal enquiries to Professor Roberts are welcome and encouraged (email: b.roberts@aston.ac.uk).

 Financial Support:

This studentship is fully funded for Home/EU applicants; it provides a tax-free stipend of approximately &amp;pound;13,590 per annum and payment of Home/EU tuition fees only. Please note: This studentship does not cover the tuition fees for overseas (non-EU) applicants. The studentship is available for three years, subject to satisfactory progress review at the end of the first year, with an anticipated start date of 1st October 2012 for Registration.

For an Engineering BSc/MSc Student, based in the School of Pharmacy

Applications are invited for a talented Engineering Post Graduate with an interest in interdisciplinary science to work on a challenging project to implement Process Analytical Technology (PAT) to improve the control of drug formulation processing, a critical area for the pharmaceutical industry with applications in many manufacturing sectors. Study will require your skills across fast prototyping, mechanical modification of equipment and electrical control but you will be learn about vacuum and compression systems for control of high vacuum and very low temperature systems that require control.

The demand for the application of Process Analytical Technology (PAT) was initiated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to control drug processing. The aim is to give equipment its own control over the processing of drugs so it can automatically improve the processing through systems engineering. Industry has, however, struggled to implement these recommendations. The candidate will work in a leading academic group in the UK in collaboration with a major worldwide pharmaceutical company developing PAT initially with their own in house system to first develop prototype sublimation monitors. This will extend to the production level by the end of the period of study with the potential of commercial scale manufacture.

The PhD will be based at Aston University for three years with an additional 1 year industrial research training with Biopharma Technology, one of the leaders in research for freeze drying worldwide, and its sister company BPS with experience of industrial freeze drier design and specification. The ability to gain pharmaceutical engineering experience across the full spread of technology can be expected with additional training in Good Manufacturing and Good Laboratory practice being provided.

Study will be within the School of Pharmacy (all applications must be through the School of Life and Health Sciences).

 Financial Support:

The studentship comprises a BBSRC maintenance stipend for the student (currently &amp;pound;16,090 per annum tax free) and payment of Home/EU tuition fees. The studentship is available under the BBSRC funding model for the duration of your registration, subject to asatisfactory progress review at the end of the first year. We anticipate either a July or October 2012 Registration.
