We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative Research Associate to join our team in investigating the role of oxysterol metabolism and APOE genotypes in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathogenesis. This project explores the intricate relationship between APOE4, altered lipid metabolism, and mitochondrial dysfunction using state-of-the-art mass spectrometry and advanced data modelling techniques. The successful candidate will work with isogenic astrocyte lines derived from gene-edited induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and apply [U-13C6] glucose tracing to analyse oxysterol synthesis and metabolism.
The successful applicant will by supervised by Dr Irundika Dias and will be based in the Medical School laboratories at Aston University, Birmingham. This is a fixed term post for 36 months, starting in May 2025 and ending in April 2028.
Key responsibilities include maintaining and differentiating iPSC-derived astrocytes, conducting lipidomics and metabolic flux analysis (MFA). The candidate will collaborate closely with data scientists to interpret and predict MFA data using nonlinear reaction-diffusion models, 13C-isotopomer analysis, and MATLAB-based simulations enhanced by Bayesian Machine Learning.
The ideal candidate should have a strong background in cell culture, and lipid metabolism, with experience in mass spectrometry and advanced data analysis being highly desirable. This project offers a unique opportunity to contribute to ground breaking research aimed at uncovering novel therapeutic targets for Alzheimer’s disease, working at the intersection of experimental biology and computational modelling.
