Research Fellow

Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies

Location:  Aston University Main Campus
Salary:  £37,099 to £41,732 per annum
Grade:  Grade 08
Contract Type:  Fixed Term (36 months)
Basis:  Full Time
Closing Date:  23.59 hours GMT on Thursday 31 October 2024
Interview Date:  To be confirmed
Reference:  0410-24
Release Date:  Sunday 01 September 2024

We have an exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral researcher to join the optical communications research group at Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies, a vibrant and international team of researchers guided by world-leading academics with strong industry expertise and experience. AiPT cultivates an environment where academics, post-doctoral researchers and students cooperate to overcome major scientific challenges in a welcoming and collegial atmosphere. AiPT is one of the world’s leading photonics research centres. Our successful track record of scientific achievements ranges from nonlinear photonics, and fibre lasers to medical lasers and bio-sensing for healthcare and the high-speed optical communications technology that underpins the internet and the digital economy.

The post is associated with the EPSRC funded project “Interferometric and Multiband optical Parametric Amplifiers for Communications.” The project is focused on research of fibre optical parametric amplifiers (FOPAs), which employ four-wave mixing in optical fibres to amplify optical signals. The aim of the project is to deliver the key advances necessary for FOPA to enable EDFA-equivalent signal amplification across O/E/S/C/L bands, and thus to realise the FOPA potential to play an important role in future optical communications.

You will perform experimental and theoretical research of FOPAs for optical communications in a team with Dr Vladimir Gordienko leading the project and a PhD student. We will assemble the world leading FOPAs employing our novel ideas in a well-equipped lab and demonstrate their performance in transmission experiments. Consequently, you will be expected to disseminate research outcomes by publishing in high impact journals and presenting at the top international conferences on optical communications. Moreover, collaborations on exciting topics with other research teams in our lab and beyond are likely as well.

If successful, you should have a PhD (or near completion or equivalent professional qualifications and experience). The experimental experience in the areas of nonlinear and/or optical fibre based devices is essential for this position, and you are expected to have background knowledge of nonlinear fibre optics and optical communications. In addition, you will have a good publication record in high impact international journals and conferences.
