We are seeking a part time post-doctoral research associate (0.8 fte), or two part time post-doctoral research associates (0.4 fte), to join the Aston Institute for Health and Neurodevelopment (IHN). Mental health conditions are prevalent in children with intellectual disability and complex learning needs. Barriers to mental health services are encountered, and many mental health conditions are unrecognised or untreated. School-based interventions are an accessible and feasible option. You will contribute to an Academy of Medical Sciences funded research project, awarded to Dr Jo Tarver, to obtain knowledge to inform the development of meaningful, effective and sustainable mental health interventions for children attending special educational needs (SEN) schools.

You will:

  • Lead data collection, and support data analysis, interpretation and dissemination of findings (co-authoring publications, attendance at conferences and stakeholder workshops)
  • Conduct observations and behavioural assessments, and collect questionnaire and survey data from children, families and schools
  • Support ethics and governance processes and liaise with project partners
  • Support the development of future grant applications
  • Contribute to broader school or IHN activities as capacity allows

The post(s) are ideal for experienced researchers with a PhD (or close to completion) who have experience of working with children with neurodevelopmental conditions or complex learning needs. Experience of working with schools would also be advantageous. The post offers an opportunity to contribute to the development of brand-new interventions and support packages suitable for delivery in SEN schools. The post-holder will work within Aston’s child-centred, translational research environment at the Aston Institute for Health & Neurodevelopment, which drives impactful “molecules to minds” research to support child development and wellbeing.
