Civil and Logistics Engineering is a growing and ambitious department, bringing together expertise across Civil Engineering, Transport, Supply Chain and Engineering Management. We are looking for an enthusiastic and collaborative academic in Geotechnical Engineering to contribute to our teaching, research and wider departmental activity.
We particularly welcome applicants who can connect geotechnical engineering with challenges facing the West Midlands, including infrastructure renewal, brownfield regeneration, resilient transport, sustainable construction, climate adaptation and the transition to net zero.
We value teamwork, collegiality and an inclusive environment, with a shared commitment to delivering an outstanding student experience.
The successful applicant will contribute through:
• Developing research projects, proposals and publications in geotechnical engineering and related areas, including infrastructure resilience, sustainable geotechnics, geohazards and geoenvironmental engineering.
• Building research impact and knowledge exchange in collaboration with external stakeholders.
• Supporting students through project supervision, laboratory and field-based learning, and industrial placements.
• Creating meaningful student opportunities through employer engagement, site visits, guest lectures, mentoring and collaborative projects, particularly across the West Midlands.
We are looking for candidates with qualifications and experience in Geotechnical Engineering, with expertise in one or more of the following:
• Site investigation, soil and rock mechanics, foundations and earthworks.
• Ground improvement, geosynthetics, slopes, retaining structures and infrastructure.
• Climate-resilient infrastructure, transport, brownfield regeneration or urban ground engineering.
• Geohazards, ground–structure interaction, earthquake engineering or numerical and physical modelling.
• Geoenvironmental engineering, sustainable materials, circular construction or low-carbon geotechnical solutions.
Expertise in sustainability, resilience or digital geotechnics would be particularly welcomed. You will also be committed to supporting a diverse range of learners and contributing positively to an inclusive, supportive and collegiate community.
