Postdoctoral Research Associate in Fluid Mechanics

Computer Science & Digital Technologies

Location:  Aston University Main Campus
Salary:  £34,980 to £39,347 per annum
Grade:  Grade 08
Contract Type:  Fixed Term (6 months)
Basis:  Full Time

Release Date:  Monday 29 April 2024

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Dr Paul Griffiths on a project entitled “Developing an accurate non-Newtonian surface rheology model”. This project aims to develop a mathematical model that can reliably reproduce experimental findings to better understand how to control the interfacial oxidation process observed in liquid metal flows.

The project will focus on the development of a numerical scheme that can accurately capture the two-way coupling between a liquid metal flow and an oxide layer. As such, it is expected that the successful candidate will have advanced knowledge of computational techniques used to solve two-phase fluid flow problems and, ideally, non-Newtonian flows. Informal inquiries are strongly encouraged and should be directed to: Dr Paul Griffiths (Senior Lecturer) - p.griffiths1@aston.ac.uk.

The successful candidate should hold a PhD or equivalent in Fluid Mechanics with a proven track record of producing scientific output at the highest level, as evidenced by high-quality journal publications. The Research Associate will work within the vibrant environment of the Aston Fluids Group, part of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, at Aston University. The group conducts both fundamental and applied research in the fields of stability, turbulence and bio-fluids as well as other areas of fluid mechanics.
