PhD Studentship: Investigation into the cytotoxic properties of extract of the plant fagonia cretica in drug-resistant cancer cells

Applications are requested from highly motivated individuals for a PhD studentship that will continue previously published work in our group on the cytoxic effects of an aqueous extract of fagonia cretica in breast cancer cells.

The study will involve production of aqueous extract from fagonia cretica and subsequent analysis of its effects in drug-resistant breast cancer cells. Further work in other hormone sensitive cancers will also likely follow from this, as will analysis of the extract for candidate compounds. The study will involve extensive laboratory experimentation, especially in the areas of Cell Culture, Cell Viability and Apoptosis Analysis, qPCR, Western Blotting, Cell Migration Assays and HLPC.

The successful candidate will work within the Cell & Tissue Biomedical Research Group within the School of Life and Health Sciences at Aston University. The exceptional quality of research in the School of Life and Health sciences has been confirmed in the latest REF results - Aston University was ranked 5th out of 94 UK Higher Education Institutions for research in Allied Health Professions (REF 2014) and was ranked 1st for research environment. Financial Support:

The studentship is open to Home/EU students only and comprises of the current RCUK tax-free stipend of £14,553 p.a. and payment of Home/EU tuition fees only. The studentship is available for three years, subject to satisfactory progress review at the end of the first year with an anticipated registration date of 1st October 2017.

  • Eligible Applicants should hold at least a Bachelor (Hons.) Degree of either 1st Class/ 2.1 or MSc in Biology, Biomedical Sciences or a related area..

  • EU Applicants will need to demonstrate adequate proficiency in English Language skills, with a minimum overall score of 93 (Internet Based) (with a minimum score in each section of: R: 18, W: 23, L: 19 and S: 19) in TOEFL or IELTS with minimum marks of 6.0 in each section and an overall band of 6.5.
