Applications are invited for a studentship in the Aston Institute of Urban Technology and the Environment (ASTUTE), funded by the School of Engineering and Applied Science. The successful applicant will join a cohort of graduate students working on projects across the broader Smart Cities field, and as part of the PhD will receive training and experience in collaborative research, relevant to industry and Smart City planners. The studentship is offered in collaboration with Ranplan Wireless, Huawei and Birmingham City Council.

The position is available to start in October 2019.

Financial Support

This studentship includes a fee bursary to cover the home/EU fees rate, plus a maintenance allowance of £15,009 in 2019/20 (subject to eligibility).

Overseas Applicants

Applicants from outside the EU may apply for this studentship but will need to pay the difference between the ‘Home/EU’ and the ‘Overseas’ tuition fees, currently this is £12,573 in 2019/20.

Project Description

Connected autonomous vehicles (CAV) represent an emerging and promising technology to tackle road safety and pollution problems, but also faces many technical challenges. In this project we propose cooperative sensing for CAVs, which exploits the increasingly powerful but underused computing and sensing resources of CAVs to improve sensing accuracy and range. Innovative cooperative sensing based road safety and efficiency applications will be developed and tested, including cooperative advanced driving assistance system (ADAS) and cooperative platooning. New vehicle to everything (V2X) communication algorithms will be developed to provide a solid basis for information exchange among vehicles and network infrastructure. Innovative research will be conducted on cutting-edge 5G V2X networks, intelligent transport systems (ITS), autonomous driving, deep learning and mobile edge computing technologies. The project benefits from external industry collaboration and the international partners of Horizon2020 project COSAFE.

Person Specification

The successful applicant should have a first class or upper second class honours degree or equivalent qualification in Electronic Engineering, Communication Engineering or Computer Science.   Preferred skill requirements include knowledge/experience of connected vehicles, autonomous driving, ADAS, deep learning and mobile edge computing.
