Senior Research Scientist – KTP Associate

This role is an exciting opportunity for candidates with PhD in Biochemistry or a relevant subject. Prior knowledge of Clostridial growth and manipulation and/or protein purification processes as well as familiarity with relevant equipment is essential. It would be beneficial if the candidate has experience of working within industry, especially in a developing business, or on intersectoral projects.

This project aims to develop the capacity of BCL2020 to express membrane-associated proteins to commercial scale at costs that are competitive, opening new avenues for income generation and business growth as well as providing research tools for societal benefit. BCL2020, (trading as Biocleave), are a highly innovative SME with unique capabilities in engineering and exploitation of the non-pathogenic clostridia for production of high value, commercially sought after research proteins. The team is based within Oxfordshire and comprises molecular biologists, fermentation engineers and protein biochemists. The Aston Membrane Proteins and Lipids Research group (AMPL) has significant expertise of expression and purification of a wide variety of membrane proteins in a range of host systems.

Candidate Profile: PhD in Biochemistry or a relevant discipline. Prior knowledge and practical experience of working with Clostridia and / or producing membrane proteins is essential.

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Excellent technical ability, IT skills for data analysis and presentation and the aptitude to learn new laboratory techniques quickly.
  • Ability to manage time and workload to meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to take ownership of the project – management of day-to-day tasks, resourcing and reporting.
  • Understanding of commercial nature of project and desire to engage with commercial aspects to define KPIs and pricing strategy.
  • Enthusiasm for training others and exchanging knowledge.

Personal attributes:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders in a multidisciplinary project team. Work independently on own initiative as and when required. Credibility to ask questions and constructively challenge.

Self-motivated & confident with good persuasion & negotiation skills.  Fit in with the organisational culture and present a positive image of the company to clients.

The Company: BCL2020 produce Research Use Only (RUO) proteins. These are used widely in industry and academia to study and develop diagnostics and disease treatments. The process of manufacturing these proteins is known as "expression", requiring host cells to produce them. BCL2020 have a strong IP position allowing them to lead the field in Clostridial research, especially around genome editing. This is a fundamental step of protein expression, and BCL2020's USP. Crucially the IP allows manufacture of proteins not viable, or extremely expensive in traditional hosts such as E. coli or mammalian cells. Find out more: 

Aston University: You will work in a project team with Dr Alan Goddard, Senior Lecturer and Associate Dean Education (HLS), Prof Roslyn Bill, Associate Dean Research (HLS) at Aston University and the Senior Management Team at BCL2020 Ltd with the support of the IUK’s Knowledge Transfer Adviser.  

Location: You will be based predominantly at BCL2020 Ltd in Abingdon, but will also have access to facilities at Aston University in central Birmingham. Some travel to key clients may also be required.
