We are pleased to announce that the Engineering and Physical Sciences College Engineering and EPSRC DTP call for PhD applications is now open. 

Our studentship awards aim to identify the best projects and recruit the best students to maintain the pipeline of the vibrant Engineering and Physical Sciences College research community. We aim to attract high calibre PhD candidates who will carry out postgraduate doctoral research that makes a significant contribution to research and knowledge in the relevant discipline.

The College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Aston University has funding available for a total of 12 fully funded PhD studentships for the Academic Year 2022-23 (from DTP and college funds). Applicants can choose from a number of projects which have been proposed by Aston Academics and Researchers, see list HERE.

The successful applicant should have been awarded, or expect to achieve, a Masters degree in a relevant subject with a 60% or higher weighted average, and/or a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree (or an equivalent qualification from an overseas institution) in the areas specified for your project of interest.  Preferred skill requirements are specified in the details of each project.

Before you apply

- Funding

 Engineering and Physical Sciences College DTP PhD studentships are fully funded for 3 years. They include a stipend based on UKRI minimum and Home tuition fees (subject to eligibility). The figures for 2022/23 are yet to be confirmed. For reference, in the 2021/22 academic year, the stipend was £15,609 and the Home tuition fees were £4,500.

-Overseas Applicants

Only limited funding is available for international candidates. Overseas applicants may apply for this studentship but will need to cover the difference between the ‘Home’ and the ‘Overseas’ tuition fees. The difference between ‘Home’ and ‘Overseas’ tuition fees for 2022/23 is yet to be confirmed. For reference, in the 2021/22 academic year, the difference was £13,100.

As part of the application, you will be required to confirm that you have applied for, or secured, this additional funding.

 - Eligibility

To be classed as a Home student, candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be a UK National (meeting residency requirements);
  • Have settled status;
  • Have pre-settled status (meeting residency requirements);
  • Have indefinite leave to remain or enter.

If a candidate does not meet the criteria above, they would be classed as an International student.

This includes students from European Union member states, with the exception of the Republic of Ireland.  Further guidance on UKRI Eligibility Criteria can be found on the UKRI website. Candidates will also be expected to meet Aston University entry requirements.

Projects are listed here (see list HERE). Choose the project that you would like to apply for and contact the lead supervisor for those that particularly interest you. They can often provide further advice and information about the project

When should I apply?

Potential students may apply from now until the 31st Jan 2022. Although we encourage any potential candidates to apply as soon as possible, incomplete applications will not be considered for the studentship and the Graduate School will not pursue applications submitted with missing documents. Similarly, applications received after the closing date will not be considered for the studentship. 

Please notice Aston University will be closed from 24th December 2021 to 4th January 2021 and queries will not be dealt with during this time.

Submitting an application

As part of the application, you will need to supply:

  • A copy of your current CV
  • Copies of your academic qualifications for your Bachelor degree, and Masters degree; this should include both certificates and transcripts, and must be translated in to English.
  • A research proposal statement giving an overview of the main themes of the research as detailed in the Background to the Project section.  This should demonstrate your understanding of the research area and how your knowledge and experience will benefit the project. Please include the supervisor’s name, project title
  • Two academic references
  • A Personal Statement
  • Proof of your English Language proficiency

What happens next

Applications received by 31st January will be referred by Graduate School PGR Admissions to the potential Supervisors. Potential candidate interviews will be either in-person or online, and will be conducted by at least 3 members of staff (Supervisor, Associate Supervisor and an independent senior member of staff). 

Applicants can expect to be informed about the primary stage by April 2022.
