The Aston Foundation Centre (AFC), sits within the School of Engineering and Technology as part of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. AFC delivers a successful suite of modules linked to Undergraduate programmes across the University, providing a pathway for students onto these programmes.

This role requires a solid understanding of foundation and undergraduate programmes, as well as the diverse learning needs of students, alongside leadership and managerial skills to successfully run this department. The Head of Department will lead and effectively manage the department in line with the College strategy. They will be responsible for all aspects of the department including strategy, planning, resourcing, staff, budgets and portfolio of programmes. 

AFC is a department that delivers one year foundation programmes for students either not holding the appropriate grade or subject mix to gain guaranteed direct entry to a number of undergraduate courses. The Head of AFC must have a good understanding of the foundation programmes, as well as the linked undergraduate programmes. They must also be able to look externally, e.g. the HE sector, government, industry and professional bodies, to understand their needs and drivers.

We are looking for a highly organised, motivated and competent leader, and manager, who can inspire their team and manage a dynamic workload. They must have a proven or developing track record of managing teams of people and/or resources. They should have experience of working in a foundation year setting and understand the needs of the students. Experience of, and passion for, the development and delivery of widening participation is essential.
