KTP Research Associate in Thermal and Fluid Modelling and Design

Location:  Mechatherm International Ltd, Hampshire House, High Street, Kingswinford, West Midlands, DY6 8AW
Salary:  £30,000 to £32,000 per annum, depending on experience
Contract Type:  Fixed Term (30 months)

This role is an exciting opportunity for candidates qualified to PhD or Master’s level, preferably with industrial experience in the Mechanical, Chemical Engineering or related field with a background in thermal and fluid modelling and energy management. They will need to be able to demonstrate excellent engineering design skills, with experience of numerical thermal and dynamic fluid flow (CFD) modelling. 

This KTP project aims to develop state-of-the-art energy efficient aluminum recycling systems, which meet evolving environmental regulations to enable Mechatherm to develop robust optimisation strategies to generate a range of cost and energy-efficient aluminium recycling systems to take to market, supporting business growth in this growing market.

Candidate Profile: PhD or Master’s degree, preferably combined with industrial experience in the Mechanical or related Engineering field. 

Key skills/ experience required include:

    Computational thermal modelling of systems (preferably using MATLAB and ASPEN) 

    Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for component modelling (preferably using Ansys)

    Ability to undertake 1D/3D coupled modelling

    A solid foundation in CAD modelling (Preferably using Invertor software)

    A methodical approach to problem solving and a willingness to learn new skills & software and extend capabilities through the project will be a key attribute.

    Ability of undertaking techno-economic analysis and modelling.

Personal attributes:

    Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

    Proactive attitude to cope with the typical day-to-day challenges encountered in working in a technical industry, finding original solutions that will be crucial to deliver the project with the necessary high levels of innovation

    Work independently on own initiative as and when required

    Work as part of a multifunctional team and be able to communicate and defend ideas to colleagues at all levels and functions of the business.

    Self-motivated and confident with good negotiation skills.  

    Fit in with the organisational culture and present a positive image of the company to clients.

The Company: Mechatherm's core business is the design and supply of capital equipment and services to the aluminium Industry. It specialises in solutions tailored to each client's specific requirements on various size projects ranging from service agreements and existing equipment upgrades to multi-million-pound turnkey projects. Mechatherm equipment is specialised and comprises mechanical and structural design, fluid power mechanics, electrical and specialised automation systems. Aston University: You will work in a project team with Dr Ahmed Rezk and Dr Muhammad Imran from the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Aston University, and the Senior Management Team at Mechatherm International Ltd with the support of the IUK-KTN’s Knowledge Transfer Adviser.  

Location: You will be based predominantly at Mechatherm International Ltd in Kingswinford, West Midlands, but will also have access to facilities at Aston University in central Birmingham. Some travel to key clients may also be required.
