Applications are invited to join our large international and multidisciplinary research team on an exciting UKRI-GCRF project, A school closer to home: using mealtimes to foster language development, improve girls' nutrition and align home and school in rural Kenya and Zambia. We are investigating the role of family mealtimes in supporting children’s transition to school and their nutrition and language development in rural African contexts. The successful candidate will be based in the School of Psychology at Aston University under the supervision of Dr. Laura Shapiro, Dr. Megan Jarman and Prof. Claire Farrow (experts in language, nutrition and eating behaviour respectively). They will also work remotely with our post-doctoral researchers in Kenya and Zambia (Dr. Henriette Zeidler and Dr. Barnabas Simatende) with support from their supervisors (Dr. Pamela Wadende and Dr. Haatembo Mooya). We are looking to appoint a research associate with expertise in either qualitative analysis and/or observational coding analysis to work alongside our team of African academics in analysing results and disseminating findings from our dataset on family language, nutrition and eating behaviour. There is scope for the research associate to take the lead on a paper to adapt their focus according to their own research interests and expertise as long as this fits with the core goal of our team. Our core goal is to work together with local experts to conduct impactful research into ways we can improve the connection between home and school. As well as enhance language outcomes and nutrition in children living in rural African contexts.

Candidates must have a PhD in developmental psychology or a related field together with excellent communication and collaboration skills including the ability to communicate effectively with an international team of academics and local experts.
