Applications are invited for Postgraduate Research studentships, supported by the Midlands Graduate School and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). 

The Midlands Graduate School is an accredited Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP). One of 14 such partnerships in the UK, the Midlands Graduate School is a collaboration between Aston University, University of Birmingham, University of Leicester, Loughborough University, University of Nottingham and the University of Warwick.

As part of the Midlands Graduate School, the School of Social Sciences and Humanities at Aston University is able to offer ESRC Doctoral Studentships in European Area Studies, and Aston Business offers ESRC Doctoral Studentships in Management & Business Studies and Finance.

The studentships are available to start in September 2021.


Following a recent announcement by the ESRC, the Midlands Graduate School ESRC DTP is delighted to open this year’s studentship competition, for entry in October 2021, to both home and international students. All applicants will be eligible for a full award consisting of a maintenance stipend (£15,285 in 2020/21), and payment of tuition fees at the home fee rate.

The ESRC studentships also include extensive support for research training, as well as research activity support grants.

Submitting An Application

In order to apply for the ESRC PhD studentship you must:

  1. Check your eligibility.
  2. Complete a PhD application form on the Aston University website
    1. For applications to the Area Studies pathway, please submit an application for the SSH Research Degree Programme and select ‘Research - Area Studies (October 2021)’ from the online application form.
    2. For applications to the Management & Business Studies or Finance pathways, please submit an application for the ABS Research Degree Programme and select ‘Aston Business School Research Degree Programme (October 2021) from the online application form. 
  3. Complete an application for Midlands Graduate School DTP funding.
     There are several elements to the application process which also require academic staff input, and applicants should allow plenty of time to assemble all the information required. As part of completing the Aston University application form, you will need to ensure to include the following documents:

·Copies of your academic qualifications for your Bachelor degree, and Masters degree; this should include both certificates and transcripts, and must be translated in to English

·Your research proposal

·A personal statement

·A copy of your current CV

·Two academic references

· Proof of your English Language proficiency for non-Native English speakers, further details can be found on our website
